Christmas, New Year: these are ideal times to tap the glass and give your company something to say. Anyway, if you go then, you must have something to say. Because calling attention to some obligatory words of welcome or thanks is better than doing nothing. For a few days that high bar lies staring at you, until you decide you're busy enough already and next year will probably be more convenient. And so if you're not careful, the opportunities slip by year after year.
But what if you did do it this year...? How nice that would be. The world could use some hopeful, warm or witty words. We'd like to help you get started with this simple and effective structure. So fill in the steps (first 2, 3 and 4, then 1 and 5), and surprise yourself and your audience! (Tip: also follow our FREE webinar).
Structure explained in more detail:
- Surprise : Grab your audience's attention by not starting off predictably, but by popping right in with a joke, anecdote or question.
Family: "Last year we were at Uncle Frank's house for Christmas, who spent the whole evening frolicking with a turkey that we ended up never seeing."
Business: "No, ladies and gentlemen, this speech was not written by ChatGPT. That's how ChatGPT started the speech I had him write for today..."
- Retrospect: Look back on the past year/period (in a maximum of 3 steps, otherwise it will be too much).
Family: "For the whole family it was an intense year with sad and happy events: the death first of Aunt Ellen and then Grandma; and then of course the birth of Philip and Stella."
Company: "It was a year of changes. We had to say goodbye to colleagues, but we also won a big order."
- Analysis: What conclusions can you draw from this, what are the lessons we have learned?Family: "An unexpected benefit of intense times is that they bring us closer together. Everyone has done their part, and is doing so again tonight."
Company: "Often we see change as a threat, but it also brings good things: that we can be creative and work better together."
- Outlook: Where is it going? Can you paint a picture of the future?
Family: "I hope we don't face another intense year like this, and that it will mostly be a year of good news, peace and success."
Company: "Because of all the changes, we are now ready for the future. We added a whole new social media department, I expect a lot from that."
- Closing: nice to end with a kind wish for the new year, or a message to take away.
Family: "But I do hope we can keep the bond we have together. From your family you have to have it! Except turkey then."
Business: "Let's make it a great year together and see the changes coming our way as opportunities."
