How to Use Storytelling in Business

We think we are rational beings, but in fact we are driven by our emotions. Storytelling is a powerful tool to evoke emotions. And thus to use in your presentation to get people moving.

But how do you apply storytelling in business presentations?

In this Speakplus we provide answers.

Storytelling in a nutshell

How do you use storytelling in your business presentations and speeches?

  • Think about what your presentation is essentially about. In other words, what is the underlying theme: for example, about"from mistakes we get better," or"stagnation is backward."
  • Find a personal story that connects to this theme.
  • Create tension with a challenge or problem(download a simple structure here).
  • Use the I.A.M. elements:
    • IMAGE: sketch the situation with details and descriptions to create a secundary world.
    • AFFECT: share the feelings and emotions you experienced in that situation.
    • MEANING: Tell why you are sharing this story and how it connects to the message of your presentation.

And..., tell your story in the present tense!

Personal Assignment

But where do you get these personal stories?

1. Remember that they don't have to be big stories, small observations and anecdotes can be just as powerful.

2. Be observant in your daily life. Only when you are aware of what the world around you looks like and what it does to you, can you describe it in triggering way, and thus use it.

3. Assignment: What experiences triggered emotions in you? Keep a journal in which you keep (small) anecdotes from your private life and at work.

Good luck and have fun!
