Winner speech of the month March 2023

Together with Jurjen Van Den Bergh, Huib Hudig chose the best speeches of this month for NPO Radio 1. Three totally different stories.

In third place is Pope Francis' speech. He welcomed a group of refugees, giving a very personal speech in which he talked about his own background as a son of migrants. Watch the speech here.

In second place was Jamie Lee Curtis' riveting speech at the Oscar ceremonies. She stole the hearts of the audience by selflessly highlighting everyone else, underscoring what a special woman she herself is. "We won an Oscar!

First place went to a special woman, Grace Linn, "100 years young" as she herself says. She spoke out against the banning of books in the US. Convincingly, she puts forth her authority: her husband fought and died for freedom in World War II. Then she argues that reading books is a primary freedom, one of the first things the Nazis destroyed. She uses powerful one-liners and ends with the words, "My husband died as a father of freedom. I am a mother of liberty.'

Grace is representative of a time when the U.S. was a champion of Western ideals that today are increasingly under attack. A frightening development. Her trembling voice is a wake-up call for all who hold freedom and democracy dear. 'Take action! Don't let this happen!'
