Speech of the Month for October!

And the speech of the month this time is from ... Barack Obama.

'Not Obama again'

'Yes, well Obama!'

Of course you've heard the good man speak before, but take a moment to listen to half a minute of this speech he gave at the memorial service for Elijah Cummings. Respectfully, Obama honored the deceased and put a surprising and compelling political spin on the story by employing a rarely used rhetorical stylistic device: the enthymeme.

This is a commonly held premise or thought that you don't express, but let the audience fill in for themselves. Not a word does he mention Trump. All he says is:

'There's nothing weak about kindness and compassion.
There's nothing weak about looking out for others.
There's nothing weak about being honourable.
You're not a sucker to have integrity, and to treat others with respect.'

The audience stands and cheers, thinking (of course): 'Trump does that! Who has no integrity! Who treats others with disrespect! And thinks you're a sucker if you treat people with respect! I don't want a president like that! We don't want to be that kind of country!'

A piece of rhetoric of the highest order. Now just hope that a Democrat can be found somewhere to take over from him.
