Speech of the Month - Politicians can learn something from this!

In early November 2020, Jurjen Van Den Bergh and Speak founder Huib Hudig again chose the Speech of the Month for the News BV on NPO Radio 1.

At number 3 was Macron's speech at the memorial for Samuel Paty, and at number 2. Merkel's blazing contribution at German General Considerations.

The winner came from a surprising quarter: the very young Labor MP Taiwo Owatemi.

She made a heartfelt plea for maintaining free meals for poor children. In doing so, she used strong rhetorical tricks:

  1. She claims the issue by stating that she herself received these meals as a child.
  2. She uses strong words, including contrast: "Food is not a luxury, but a basic human right.
  3. She pauses at the end and says, "What are we actually doing here?Which makes you ask yourself the same question as a viewer.

It just goes to show that an inspiring speech does not have to be a slick story.
